Dr. Samuel T. Ariaratnam is a professor and construction engineering program chair in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. He has published more than 250 technical papers, holds four patents and is active in numerous professional organizations. He is the immediate past chairman of ISTT and was appointed to the Executive Committee of the ASCE Pipelines Division. He is co-author of the " HDD Good Practices Guidelines” and the “ Pipe Bursting Good Practices” books.

Dave Bennett is Principal of Bennett Trenchless Engineers in Folsom, California. Bennett has 41 years of geotechnical and trenchless engineering experience. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Mississippi State University, and his Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in five states.

Throughout his career, Reinhard developed new information and digital content products, location-based applications, software tools and services for global markets and various industries. In 2011 Reinhard joined Vermeer as global product manager responsible for new product development utilizing information technologies in the construction industry with the goal to improve productivity of job operations.

Ralph Carpenter is as 39-year veteran of the pipe industry having served in capacities that involved pipe design, engineering, sales and marketing, and project management. Ralph has spent the past 24 years, 8 months with AMERICAN Ductile Iron Pipe and AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe, of which the last 22 years he was responsible for the trenchless applications for both product lines. Ralph will be retiring shortly after this HDD Academy; officially he begins his well-deserved retirement on March 1st.

A 2004 graduate of Hamilton College in New York State, Ben holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and has worked at Derrick for 12 years. Derrick Corporation has more than 65 years of experience in the manufacture of premium solids control and fine screening equipment for the industrial mining, oil/gas drilling, and civil construction markets.

Prior to joining ASU, Aaron served for 10 years as the president and owner of Apollo Trenchless Inc.

Ryan began his career with Halliburton/Bentonite Performance Minerals 10 years ago in the industrial drilling fluids research and development laboratory. During that time, he led product development efforts, provided technical support to industrial drilling operations, and managed research and development with a focus on the characterization of drilling fluids utilized for industrial drilling applications.

Rob Coyle began his career in 1981 as a surveyor’s assistant staking new pipeline routes and locating existing lines. Throughout his career, Rob has used the Tru Track system (DC) and the Para Trac system (AC) to accomplish many technically difficult crossings in four continents and 11 countries. He is currently Field Sales Manager for Sharewell, where he assists field staff and sells the company’s line downhole tooling, hole openers, drill bits and guidance systems.

Danny Crumpton has been with INROCK since 1998, where he started as a field engineer and has progressed to new business development/technical sales manager. He has extensive knowledge in guidance systems for both oil field and HDD applications. He has been instrumental in developing the guidance systems used in the HDD industry today. He has developed an EDR system for the HDD market and also manages research and development for new products.

Jeff Davis brings 20 years of experience and extensive underground construction knowledge to his current role, after serving multiple roles within the Ditch Witch organization. As the product manager for HDD tooling and drill pipe, he is responsible for the oversight of HDD tooling and drill pipe product development to meet customer needs and provide solutions for underground construction professionals.  Witch organization. As product manager for vacuum excavation, he is responsible for identifying the needs of underground construction professionals and providing high-performance solutions for demanding excavation, cleanup and repair tasks.

Dennis Doherty is a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers and has 25 years of experience specializing in the use of trenchless technologies in highly urbanized areas. He is highly experienced in design of microtunneling, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), auger bore, cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP), pipe bursting and manhole rehabilitation methods. He has extensive experience in the evaluation, design, and construction of underground infrastructure. Doherty has also served as technical advisor on complicated underground utility projects requiring technical memorandum for policy makers and decision makers.

Siggi Finnsson has an engineering background and has been involved in the underground construction industry for 28 years. He started his career with The Robbins Co. and joined Digital Control Inc. in 1995 and has been involved in the development of most of DCI’s locating products, in addition to working in customer service and marketing activities. Finnsson is currently a Product Manager, primarily involved with new product development and product and design definitions.

Mark Gallucci has more than 20 years with Digital Control Incorporated. Mark has held many positions over his career including Western States Field Manager, Training Manager and General Manager of DCI Australia. Currently, he looks after the In-house Customer Service group and is responsible for the training material found on DCI’s YouTube channel. Training DigiTrak users has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of Gallucci’s career with DCI. Prior to joining DCI, Mark spent seven years in the Field Service department of a prominent tunnel boring machine manufacturer.

Dave is currently President of American Augers, Inc. in West Salem, Ohio.  American Augers is a manufacturer of directional drills, auger boring machines, large trenchers and mud mixing/cleaning systems.  American Augers is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Charles Machine Works.

Dave received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Business Administration from Ashland University.  Before joining American Augers in 2005, Dave held various upper-level management positions at Ideal Electric Company in Mansfield, Ohio, a manufacturer of very large scale, engineer-to-order, electric motors, generators and switchgear controls.  During that time, Dave held the positions of Business Unit Team Manager for Ideal Electrics highest volume product line, Director of Materials Management, Production Inventory Control Manager and Senior Buyer.  In addition to Dave’s numerous years of experience in heavy, engineer-to-order products and associated top management disciplines, he began his career with MTD Products.  MTD is a mass manufacturer of lawn and garden equipment and is where Dave worked his way through college, began his career, and held several middle management positions.

Dr. Gerhard Lang’s background is in civil and mechanical engineering. After working for Herrenknecht as project manager on some traffic tunneling jobs in Europe, he finished his Ph.D. in civil engineering and an MBA in international marketing before he went to work for Amiantit. He returned to Herrenknecht in 2008 as business development manager for the Utility Tunneling division with focus on the North American market operations.

Mary Neher is a senior project engineer with Bennett Trenchless Engineers in Folsom, California. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and her Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of California, Davis. Mary has designed numerous challenging trenchless pipeline projects and provided on-site inspection for HDD, pipe ramming, and microtunneling jobs. Additionally, she has authored and presented landmark technical papers, taught trenchless courses and symposiums, and advanced the state of design practice in the area of HDD pipe stress analysis and hydrofracture risk evaluations. Mary was awarded the Trent Ralston Young Trenchless Achievement Award in 2016.

Alan Snider has more than 27 years in constructing, designing and managing complex horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and Direct Pipe (DP) projects for pipeline crossings. Founded in 1989, Laney has been a trenchless technology pioneer, as has Snider in his career. He is responsible for the overall management of the company, including leadership of the HDD, Direct Pipe, and Engineering, Sales and Marketing, and Estimating teams. Since joining Laney in 2011, he also served as Vice President of Engineering and Project Management. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree.
